The price of transformation?

This is what the greats
Have been trying to say
All thoughout seasons
Suffering is at bay

But people only see their glory
They only highlight
The beautiful parts of their story
They refuse to read the other lines
Presented, and the lines in between

The wisest witnessed the worst traumas
The richest saw the depths of poverty
The most powerful were once helpless
The beautiful was once had absence of admirers

But still,
When someone sees you
On your way uphill
They’ll always ask
What are your secrets?
What are your strategies?

They won’t say this, but rather
The greats would prefer questions
Like, what price did you pay for such embelishment?
How much pain was inflicted
That made you loss your innocence?
And belief that there is good in everything?

What kind of betrayal was fallen upon
That made you wary of people?
And made your senses sharp against bad intentions?

What harsh environments have you witnessed?
That made you so quick-witted
To solve dire situations

What darkness have you seen
That made you loss the light in your eyes?
And made you eye everyone in suspicion?
And keep people at arms length

Why are you so keen on your appearance?
Why do always make yourself presentable?
Is it to hide who you were
When they treated you harshly?

Because it is what the greats would say
Be it physically, mentally, psychologically
Transformation for better or worse
Is transformation so painful

So before you say you want to be
One of the greats
Try to bear their pain
Think twice, before
You say it again
